Humor Styles Test

What makes you and the people around you laugh? Everyone's humor works differently - some use it to bring people together, some to keep perspective on their own mishaps, some to comment on the world, and some would rather be the target themselves. The test measures all four styles separately and turns your mix into one of twelve profiles - along with what your range gives you and what it costs you.

What you'll learn from the test

The test does not measure whether you are funny, but what humor does for you - and what your particular range gives you and takes away.

How much of each is in your humor

Four independent scales: bonding, self-enhancing, sharp and self-mocking humor. They do not exclude each other and they do not add up to a hundred percent, so you can score high on several at once.

Your profile out of twelve

Your strongest style and the one right behind it combine into one of twelve profiles - from The Easygoing Entertainer to The Sharp Self-Mocker - together with your place on the humor map.

Humor in practice

Where your range helps you, where it grinds, and how to dose it in relationships, at work and in moments when things get tense. The advice differs from profile to profile, because so does your combination.

4 humor styles

The styles come from two questions: what tone your humor has (warm or sharp) and who it aims at (you or other people). Two choices times two make four styles - and we measure each of them separately.

BO
Bonding You use humor to bring people together - a joke, for you, is there to loosen the group up so everyone feels good around the same table.
SE
Self-enhancing Humor is your inner support - when a day goes badly you find the comic side of it and carry on.
SH
Sharp Your humor has an edge - you tease, you comment, and a well-aimed barb is the spice of conversation for you.
SM
Self-mocking You make yourself the target - you tell the story of your own blunder sooner and better than anyone else could.

What is the humor styles test?

The humor styles test does not answer the question of whether you are funny, but the question of what humor does for you - and that is something else entirely. People who ask themselves "what kind of sense of humor do I have" are usually not after a grade but a description: what you laugh at, when you reach for a joke and who tends to be its target. That is exactly what the test measures. It has 24 original items, six for each of the four styles, and gives you a separate score on every one of them.

The four styles come from two simple questions. The first is tone: is your humor warm or sharp? The second is focus: does it aim at other people or at yourself? A warm tone aimed outwards is bonding humor, which brings people together and loosens them up. Warm aimed inwards is self-enhancing humor, that is, perspective on your own mishaps. Sharp aimed outwards is sharp humor - teasing, barbs, the well-aimed remark. And sharp aimed inwards is self-mocking humor, where you make the target out of yourself. The scales are independent: they do not exclude each other and they do not add up to a hundred percent, so you can score high on two or even three at once. The result is therefore not one box but a mix - and your strongest and second strongest style produce one of twelve profiles, from The Easygoing Entertainer to The Sharp Self-Mocker.

The test draws on humor styles research, which Rod Martin developed in psychology, but the items and the scoring are our own. So take the result as an indicative self-discovery profile rather than a diagnosis - and above all not as a verdict: sharp humor is not a character flaw and self-irony is not low self-esteem, in both cases context and dose decide. A humor style also ties into personality. Bonding humor often goes hand in hand with extraversion and agreeableness in research, that is, with two of the five dimensions in the Big Five test, while sharp humor tends to be linked to the traits mapped by the dark triad test. Those are averages across thousands of people, not rules about an individual - add them to your humor and you see the whole picture.

Frequently asked questions

What does the humor styles test measure?

It measures four humor styles separately: bonding (you use humor to bring people together), self-enhancing (humor is your inner support), sharp (you tease and comment) and self-mocking (you are your own target). The scales are independent, so you can score high on two or even three at once - the result is not one box but a mix. Your strongest and second strongest style then combine into one of twelve profiles.

Is sharp humor a bad thing?

No. Sharp humor names what everybody sees and nobody says, and among people who trust each other teasing works as a sign of closeness. At the same time it always happens at somebody's expense, so whether it connects or cuts is decided by context and dose, not by your intent. It is a tool with an edge on both sides - not a character flaw. The same holds in reverse: self-irony is not automatically low self-esteem either.

Can a humor style be changed?

It can be worked with. A humor style is largely a habit - a learned move you reach for automatically because it has served you well. A habit shifts more slowly than a decision, but it is certainly not a verdict: people who notice when and why they reached for their usual range usually find within a few weeks that they have a choice. And the goal is not to swap your style, but to widen your options.

How long does the humor styles test take?

About 3 minutes. There are 24 short statements, and for each one you choose how well it describes you.

What do I get in the extended version?

The whole profile of your humor - how your mix is put together, how it shows up at work and at home, and where it most often costs you more than you expect. Plus the humor map with your place between tone and focus, the two summary indexes and the breadth of your range. And above all the Humor in practice section: concrete tips for relationships, work, tense moments and dosing your main style.
