What Big Five misses: honesty-humility

The sixth factor that five-factor models lack, and what your score says about fairness.

70Honesty-Humility

High score

Your score is high, so fairness is not a tactic for you but a default setting. You typically will not take the shortcut nobody would ever find out about, and neither status nor possessions are how you decide what a person is worth. In practice that makes you someone who can be handed a budget, a set of credentials or another person's secret, and the people around you work that out over time. Two shadows worth watching: underselling your own contribution, and being at a loss in an environment where people really do play tricks.

The six factors in detail

What your score means in each factor and how it shows up in relationships and at work.

Conscientiousness

High score · strongest

You have a plan, you hit deadlines, and unfinished work does not let you rest. Order around you and in your head is a working tool rather than a quirk, and people can count on you even when they have let their own standards slip. The shadow side: perfectionism can stretch out something that was ready to ship, and your bar is not comfortable for everyone around you.

In relationships

Higher conscientiousness means promises hold and an agreed time can be relied on - an underrated form of security in a relationship. At the same time, watch that your own bar does not turn into the yardstick for everyone around you. Lower conscientiousness brings lightness, but also the repeated sentence "I forgot", which can wear a relationship down faster than any big argument.

At work

High conscientiousness fits anywhere a mistake carries a price: finance, operations, project management, healthcare, engineering. Lower conscientiousness pays off where the scope changes faster than anyone can write the plan. When you and your environment are mismatched, it shows up in deadlines long before it shows up in ability.

How this maps onto Big Five

Where the six HEXACO factors agree with the Big Five and where they part ways.

  • ExtraversionHEXACO55
  • ExtraversionBig Five26

Effectively the same thing. Both scales measure sociability, energy and appetite for being seen, so these two scores of yours should line up very closely. When they still differ, the difference in items and the gap between the two sittings usually explains more than personality does.

  • ConscientiousnessHEXACO76
  • ConscientiousnessBig Five53

Near twins. Organization, work ethic and prudence are measured almost identically in the two models; the small difference is only how much weight goes to perfectionism and planning.

  • OpennessHEXACO34
  • OpennessBig Five68

Near twins. Curiosity, imagination and a feel for beauty sit in the same place in both models, with HEXACO leaning a little harder on the appetite for doing things unconventionally.

  • AgreeablenessHEXACO48
  • AgreeablenessBig Five48

Only a partial overlap. Agreeableness in HEXACO is built on patience, gentleness and the ability to forgive, while in Big Five it sits closer to warmth and trust. So a gap between these two scores is not a measurement error, it is a difference in what is being measured.

  • EmotionalityHEXACO28
  • NeuroticismBig Five16

The trickiest pair of all. Emotionality is not neuroticism: it also covers empathy, compassion and attachment to the people close to you, none of which counts toward neuroticism. Irritability and anger, meanwhile, belong to low agreeableness in HEXACO. A higher number here does not mean worse mental health.

  • Honesty-HumilityHEXACO70Big Five · No counterpart

Honesty-humility has no counterpart in Big Five, which is exactly why you get it here as an extra. What your score means for you is in the section on the sixth factor above.
